Snuff
Many of the mills along the Wandle were converted into snuff mills as the taking of snuff became fashionable. Snuff is produced from tobacco leaves. The leaves are dried and then ground into a fine dust. Herbs grown near the Wandle were often added to the snuff to flavour it. As the taking of snuff became more and more popular, decorative snuff boxes and snuff bottles were must haves for fashionable society. Examples of these, especially snuff bottles, can be seen in the museum.
